Transportation | Electric Mobility | Illinois
Project Summary
Aldridge was awarded the electrical scope on a pilot project that introduced Chicago’s first 20 electric buses into the transit system. This was the 1st step toward the City’s plan to convert all conventional buses to electric buses over the next 10+ Years.
The scope of work for Aldridge consisted of the installation of new Heliox 500kW AC/DC charging equipment, overhead charging masts, DC power and signal cabling along with ComEd service, switchgear, general power, lighting, fire alarm, security and communications at 3 locations. The 1st location was an existing bus garage in which Aldridge crews installed a 500kW charging system, pantograph for charging connection to the bus, and a 125kW Depot charging unit with a plug in style charging connections. The other 2 locations, Chicago Austin and Navy Pier, were new station sites so the work included building infrastructure, ComEd service, 500kW charging systems, and mast arm pantograph’s for the bus charging connection. Aldridge also supported the city with the federal grant process to secure approximately $9 million, advancing a second wave of electrical buses into the system. Aldridge was designated as the selected construction partner for this work.
