Middle Township to Wildwoods Reliability Project - New Jersey

Power | Foundations | Helical | New Jersey

Project Summary

Atlantic City Electric (ACE) engaged Aldridge to provide a foundation solution for transmission line structures on the Grassy Sound Channel. The structures were 300’ high and supported the wire as it crossed the channel. All of the structure sites were logistically challenging. Aldridge was responsible for a turnkey solution including engineering, procurement, and construction of the foundations. Aldridge provided important constructability guidance during the design of the foundations. Structures 51 and 52 were on a peninsula in a residential area with narrow streets to access the site and a limited working area due to the proximity of a house, the existing transmission facilities, and the waterway. Structures 49 and 50 were across the channel and not accessible by vehicle. Amphibious equipment and work boats were used to access these locations.

Maintaining work in compliance with the stringent environmental requirements for water and wetland areas was of critical importance. An environmental restoration and stabilization project was underway close to the project creating further awareness of environmental concerns. Aldridge installed a turbidity curtain in the water around the perimeter of the work areas for erosion and sediment control to protect the water in the bay from potential silt discharge. Another added benefit of using the amphibious equipment at structures 49 and 50 was the minimal ground pressure that the equipment produced. This eliminated the need for matting for access and abated any appreciable ground disturbances (i.e. rutting). The project was completed in December 2020.
