Project Summary
Aldridge performed work on a new 55,000sf 230kV/13kV indoor Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) in Washington, DC. This included cable tray, lighting, general power, security and fire alarm systems, battery energy storage system (BESS), installation of electrical panels, relay cabinets, station service transformers, capacitor banks, along with the dressing out of four 56 MVA transformers and two 50 MVAR reactors, 230kV OH Bus & 13.8kV OH Bus.
The substation, located in an urban neighborhood, required close coordination with the surrounding community through our use of pedestrian and traffic safety controls. The facility will be able to deliver energy for the growing residential and commercial demands of that area. This new substation is part of a larger enhancement program which will also include upgrading three existing substations and then ten miles of underground transmission line to connect the substations to create a networked energy system. This is a major effort to protect and strengthen the aging transmission and substation infrastructure in the area.
