Project Summary
Aldridge has teamed up with South Capitol Bridge Builders on the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Project in Washington, DC, the largest project in DDOT history. The existing bridge has been classified obsolete and is in dire need of replacement as it is a vital corridor connecting Southwest Washington, DC with Southeast Washington, DC.. The new bridge will increase safety, accessibility, and traffic.
Aldridge’s work began in June 2018 and includes roadway and bridge lighting (aesthetic and navigational), fiber optic cable installation, sign structures, traffic signaling, duct bank, and Communication & Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS). Aldridge is also setting up the building distribution equipment that will be installed under the bridge and will supply power, lighting, and ventilation inside the arches for maintenance workers. This included the installation of 2-14 cell duct banks for the local utility. The duct bank consisted of 8- 8”, 4-4“, and 2-2” fiberglass reinforced conduits in the floor beams that run the entire length of the 1,450 FT bridge.
The Aldridge PreFab Team, built assembled 12 FT sections that were rigged at an angle to slide into the window of the floor beams as one whole duct bank section. This greatly accelerated the schedule, allowing crews to move forward the installation timeframe and work within the tight window for installation.
Included in the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative Program, this project is part of a $10 Billion program concentrated on transforming the shores of the Anacostia River into a waterfront destination.
